A 42-year old man in Germany is now free of any sign of HIV after a stem cell transplant to treat his leukemia. Apparently the donor of the stem cells had a naturally occurring genetic trait that helped resist HIV. This trait is referred to as CCR5 delta32. CCR5 is a type of receptor that HIV uses to attack the body, however a small percentage of people have CCR5 delta32, which makes them have resistance to HIV.
The new billion dollar rescue package misses the entire point. This problem in society – the reason why we need a billion dollar rescue package – is because we refuse to take the blame. Instead of seeing our own mistakes in spending and learning from them, people see this problem as something bad that “just happened.” However, not everything in the economy can be attributed to an individual’s fault. For example, it is not the fault of an individual if he is now one of the many standing in the unemployment line due to job cuts. But we cannot ignore the problem in individual spending for those of us who are guilty. To borrow a line from Lily Allen’s song, The Fear, she sings “I am a weapon of massive consumption. It’s not my fault it’s how I’m programmed to function.” This line sounds more and more like the attitude of the American public that led us to this mess in the first place.

We’ve reached tougher economic times and, as always, people are complaining about the dangers of a free market. Free markets are risky, but what we’ve been experiencing since the Great Depression isn’t exactly a free market. At times, it hasn’t even been close. Before we start crying for more regulation, we should attempt to understand our economy and find out what caused this crisis.
This hurricane season has proved to be one with effects more far-reaching than simply the coastal states. The latest of causes is that of Hurricane Ike. The size of Ike is what made it one of the more powerful storms we have seen this season. Ike was measured to be 70% larger than the average hurricane, causing evacuations issued for coastal areas, especially around the Houston metro area. Texas issued evacuation orders for counties in a staggered order, which helped to avoid traffic jams on the interstates and highways away from the coast.
