This is the start of a new series in the paper to review movies I’ve seen. A true story based on the life of John Merrick, played by John Hurt, a horribly deformed person that was alive in Victorian England.

Although John was a medical oddity, he is an intelligent person that was abused and tormented by the uncivilized lower class, representing the fear and hatred of something unknown. Dr. Frederick Treves, Anthony Hopkins, is enthralled by the medical problems that plague Mr. Merrick and at first sees him as an oddity but through their interactions the doctor comes to the conclusion that his patient is a living soul that lives not only in the flesh but also has a soul and a mind.
Some people might not give this film a chance, purely because it’s in black and white. I, on the other hand, thought that the choice to neglect color was an addition to the film by adding more color to the human emotions. This is the first film I have seen that is directed by David Lynch, and after viewing it I want to see more.
